Tekkoshocon, Fans Support Local, Global Neighbors Through Charity Events
PITTSBURGH, PA - March 28, 2011 - Pittsburgh, home of "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood", prides itself upon its neighborly culture. To that end, Pittsburgh's Japanese pop culture convention, Tekkoshocon, is pleased to announce several charity initiatives for this year's event to be held March 31 – April 3 at the Wyndham Grand Pittsburgh Downtown.
This year's Charity Auction will benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Cystic fibrosis (or CF) leads the body to create thick, sticky mucus that clogs the lungs and obstructs the digestion process. Over the past 56 years, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation has been a driving force in research, playing a key role in the development of several widely used CF therapies and supporting genetic research. While half a century ago individuals who suffered from CF were not expected to live long enough to attend school, the median predicted age of survival for individuals with CF is now at 37.4 years and rising thanks in large part to the CF Foundation's efforts and investments. The convention's annual Charity Auction offers guests the opportunity to support this worthy cause by bidding on one-of-a-kind autographed DVDs, wallscrolls, and other great items from several of our Guests of Honor as well as the cast and crew at FUNimation.
Tekkoshocon is also pleased to support the relief efforts in Japan with the debut of an exclusive tea party event. The event, to take place on Sunday, April 3, will feature tea and light refreshments as well as a Chinese auction where guests will have the opportunity to take home a variety of gift baskets to complement the interests of every fan. Tickets to this event are $20 and proceeds from both the ticket sales and Chinese auction will benefit GACKT's Show Your Heart charity.
Finally, the attendees of Tekkoshocon IX are working with the convention to present a food drive run by the fans to benefit the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. Coordination of the drive is being handled by Tekko attendees in conjunction with service clubs at area high schools. Donations will be accepted at the first floor Info Desk until the close of registration on Sunday.
