Azumi Arrives in Theatres Nationwide
Urban Vision Entertainment releases first theatrical film on AsiaVision label; Premieres at Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood
Los Angeles, California (July 18, 2006)—In its debut theatrical release, AsiaVision—the Asian live-action film label of Urban Vision Entertainment—will release the Japanese blockbuster film AZUMI in a limited nationwide run. Directed by Ryuhei Kitamura (Versus, Godzilla: Final Wars) and produced by Mataichiro Yamamoto (Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, Mishima: A Life In Four Chapters), the film will open in New York on July 21st and in Los Angeles on July 28th, and will tour major U.S. cities through the summer, including Chicago and San Francisco.
AZUMI will receive its Hollywood premiere at the legendary Egyptian Theatre on July 25, 2006, where a limited number of tickets will be available to the public via the Egyptian Theatre box office on the day of the event. Scheduled to attend are AZUMI Director Kitamura and Producer Yamamoto, among others.
AZUMI takes place in 19th century war-torn feudal Japan when a master samurai takes on the task of raising ten orphans and training them to be assassins. Their single-minded mission: do the bloody work of the state by silencing troublesome warlords. After a decade of inconceivably harsh training and discipline, Azumi and her comrades face the task of assassinating the powerful warlords Nagamasa Asano and Kiyomasa Kato. But burdened with the cruel assignment that means killing friends and enemies alike, Azumi begins to question her faith in her master and her devotion to her country. Still, Azumi remains determined to single-handedly complete her bloodbath mission.
"We are extremely proud to be giving AZUMI its first U.S. theatrical release. We are constantly awed by the size of the fan base it has generated, despite the film never receiving an official U.S. release prior to this. We are very thankful that these fans have shown us such support in this release," states Urban Vision Entertainment Executive Vice President Sandee Yamamoto.
AZUMI is based on the comics of Yū Koyama, which have sold more than 8 million copies, and stars popular Japanese singer/actress Aya Ueto. The film grossed approximately $7.5 million USD in its Japanese run and inspired a sequel, Azumi 2: Death or Love, which is also scheduled to be released by AsiaVision. AZUMI was an official selection of the Sundance Film Festival and South by Southwest Film Festival, among others. A two-disc collector's edition DVD release of AZUMI will follow on November 7, 2006.
