PVR Pictures announced on Thursday that the Sword Art Online the Movie -Progressive- Aria of a Starless Night anime film will open in PVR, Inox, and Cinépolis theaters across Mumbai, Pune, Ahmedabad, Surat, Delhi, Gurgaon, Noida, Chandigarh, Kolkata, Guwahati, Indore, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Kochi.

The film opened in India on Friday. PVR Pictures listed the theaters that are screening the film.

PVR Pictures describes the film:

This is the story of a time before Lightning Flash and the Black Swordsman were known by those names. Asuna Yuuki was a girl in the ninth grade who'd never had anything to do with online games when she accidentally put on the NerveGear that fateful day.
The game master speaks “This may be a game, but its not something you play.
“Game Over” means you die in the real world.” Hearing this, the players are sent into a state of confusion, and pandemonium reigns in the game. One of these players is Asuna. Despite not even knowing the rules of this new world, she sets out on her journey to the floating steel castle of Aincrad, its apex not yet visible. As she continues to live on in this world where death is always a step away, Asuna has a fateful encounter followed by a parting. Despite being at the mercy of this strange reality, she fights on valiantly until someone appears before her: the solitary swordsman, Kirito.

The film had an advance IMAX screening on September 15 at the T-Joy PRINCE Shinagawa theater in Tokyo. The film then opened nationwide in Japan on October 30 in standard and IMAX theaters, and topped the box office in its first weekend. The film earned a cumulative total of 1,326,146,793 yen (about US$11.67 million) as of December.

Ayako Kohno (unit director on Black Butler: Book of the Atlantic, High School Fleet, The Seven Deadly Sins the Movie: Prisoners of the Sky) directed the film at A-1 Pictures, and Kento Toya (Sword Art Online: Alicization - War of Underworld, The Seven Deadly Sins: Revival of The Commandments) designied the characters. Yasuyuki Kai served as action director, and Yuki Kajiura returned to compose the music.

Also returning are Yoshitsugu Matsuoka as Kirito and Haruka Tomatsu as Asuna in the voice cast.

The anime is based on Reki Kawahara's Sword Art Online: Progressive light novel series. The novel series launched in 2012 as a revised retelling of Kawahara's original Sword Art Online novels. The story depicts Kirito's journey through the floating Aincrad castle from the beginning, floor-by-floor. Yen Press is publishing the Sword Art Online: Progressive novel series in English, as well as two manga adaptations.

A new film titled Sword Art Online the Movie -Progressive- Kuraki Yūyami no Scherzo (Scherzo of a Dark Dusk) will open in 2022.
