Game announced in 2016 with NieR:Automata/Bayonetta developer

Cygames announced on Tuesday that it will take over development of the Granblue Fantasy: Relink PlayStation 4 game from Platinum Games. The announcement did not reveal the reason for the takeover. Platinum Games also published a similar statement on its website, saying that its contract with Cygames has ended, and asking fans to keep supporting the game.

The game is planned for English, French, Italian, German, and Spanish localizations.

The game is an action role-playing game featuring illustrations by Cygames and CyDesignation. Cygames' Koichi Haruta is producing the game, Tetsuya Fukuhara is directing the game, Hideo Minaba is designing the characters, and Nobuo Uematsu and Tsutomu Narita are composing the music. The game will feature a new story.

Players will get to choose between an unnamed male (voiced by Yūki Ono) or female (voiced by Hisako Kanemoto) main character. Other allied characters confirmed for the game include Lyria (Nao Tōyama), Vyrn (Rie Kugimiya), Katalina (Miyuki Sawashiro), Rackam (Hiroaki Hirata), Io (Yukari Tamura), Eugen (Keiji Fujiwara), and Rosetta (Rie Tanaka). Furycane will be a primal beast in the game.

Cygames released the original Granblue Fantasy smartphone game in 2014, and the game has more than 23 million downloads.

The first anime adaptation of the smartphone game premiered in Japan in April 2017 and ran for 13 episodes. The show's seventh and final Blu-ray Disc and DVD volume, which shipped last October, included an unaired episode titled "EXTRA 2." Aniplex of America streamed the series on the services Crunchyroll, Daisuki, and Anime Strike.

The Zankutinzeru-Hen (Zankutinzeru Arc) anime special debuted in Japan in January 2017. Crunchyroll, Daisuki, and Anime Strike streamed the special. Aniplex of America released the anime on Blu-ray Disc with an English dub last May and July.

Arc System Works is developing a fighting game for the franchise titled Granblue Fantasy Versus that will launch on the PS4 in 2019.
