Koei Tecmo America and Koei Tecmo Europe began streaming a launch trailer for the Warriors Orochi 4 (Musou Orochi 3) game this week. The game launched for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC in North America on Tuesday, and on the same platforms in Europe on Friday.
In Japan, the game launched for the PlayStation 4 and the Switch on September 27, and on PC on October 16.
The game has 170 playable characters, which is a not only a new record for the game series, but a world record for most playable characters in a hack-and-slash video game. In addition to new characters, the game features a new "thaumaturgy action" attack method.
Omega-Force returned to produce the title, the first new game in the franchise in five years. The first Warriors Orochi (Musou Orochi) game featured characters from the Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warriors franchises when it shipped in 2007 for PlayStation 2 and Xbox 360.
Warriors Orochi 3 (Musou Orochi 2 due to a renumbering change in the West) debuted in 2011 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and the Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate update shipped for PS3 and PS Vita in Japan in September 2013. A PS4 version launched in June 2014, and a Switch version launched last November. In the West, the game launched in September 2014 on PS4, Xbox One, PS3, and PS Vita. Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate added characters from the Dead or Alive, Ninja Gaiden, Soul Calibur, and Atelier series, among others, for a total of more than 142 playable characters.
