Analytics company App Annie reported on Monday that Niantic's Pokémon Go smartphone game earned US$950 million in 2016. An earlier report by App Annie revealed in October that the game had earned US$600 million in less than 90 days, faster than any other mobile game.
Niantic announced last month that players had collectively walked more than 8.7 billion kilometers as of December 7. Microsoft Research published a study in October that revealed players of the game accounted for an estimated 144 billion steps taken in its first 30 days of release in the United States. Analytics company Slice Intelligence reported in September that the number of paying players in the United States peaked in July.
The app won the categories of Best Family Game and Best Mobile/Handheld Game at the Game Awards in December.
The mobile game launched in select countries including the United States and Japan in July, and has since launched in more than 100 countries and territories. The app launched for the Apple Watch last month.
