The September issue of Kadokawa's Monthly Comic Gene magazine revealed on Friday that Nanao will launch a spinoff manga of the Of the Red, the Light, and the Ayakashi (Aka ya Akashi ya Ayakashi no) manga in the magazine's next issue, which Kadokawa will publish on September 15.
Yen Press is releasing the original manga in North America, and it describes the story:
Sheltered Yue, born and raised in a Shinto shrine, is forbidden from leaving the shrine grounds he and a number of other curious residents call home. One day Yue breaks the rules and wanders down the mountain and into a winter festival. As he takes in the sights and sounds of the human gathering, all the people making merry appear in a uniform guise to Yue's eyes - that of black bestial shadows... until he crosses paths with two human boys, Tsubaki and Akiyoshi. Intrigued by their unique, individual appearances, Yue is eager to make friends with them. However, upon his return home, the shrine goddess informs him that he may pursue these friendships... but only in preparation for the "meal" - for which he must select one of his two new friends as the main course!
The manga adapts the dōjin game of the same name. Dōjin circle HaccaWorks* released the "spirited away adventure" game for the PC in Japan in 2011, and on the PlayStation Portable in 2014. The artist Nanao launched the main manga version in Monthly Comic Gene in 2012, and ended it on June 15. Kadokawa published the manga's ninth and final compiled book volume (seen right) on July 27. Yen Press released the manga's third volume digitally and in print on June 21.
