Keisuke Toyoshima is directing the film, with a script by Jun Tsugita. Toyoshima and Tsugita previously worked together on the Kaidan Shin Mimibukuro (Tales of Terror) live-action film, as well as the 2013 live-action adaptation of CLAMP's xxxHOLiC manga. Grand Funk will compose the film's music.
Fukumitsu's original Seikatsu manga centers on Nakatsu, a part-time worker at a convenience store in the suburbs. He is constantly gloomy, and is unable to acknowledge himself or his everyday life. He comes up with a plan, and decides to find people who think the same way he does. Together, they act to punish evil in their town.
Fukumitsu launched the manga in Seirinkogeisha's AX alternative manga magazine in 2005, and serialized it until 2007, when Fukumitsu put the manga on an indefinite hiatus. Fukumitsu relaunched the manga in May 2009 on the official website of Kodansha's Morning magazine as a web manga.
Seirinkogeisha published one compiled book volume of the manga in 2008. Kodansha reprinted the volume with an additional 24 pages as Seikatsu (Kanzenban) (Life Complete Edition) in May 2010.
