Comiket 86 Draws 170,000 Visitors on Day 1
posted on by Jennifer Sherman
About 170,000 people attended the first day of the Comic Market (Comiket) 86 event at the Tokyo Big Sight convention center on Friday. The number of attendees decreased by about 40,000 from last summer's Comiket 84. Comiket 86 runs until Sunday.
Comiket 84 holds the record for the most attendees on the first day with about 210,000. One reason for the decrease in attendees may be that this year's event began on a Friday, while Comiket 84 opened on a Saturday.
About 11,800 doujin circles offered dōjinshi inspired by manga and anime such as Tiger & Bunny and Free! on the first day. About 11,700 circles will exhibit dōjinshi based on Touhou Project and other works on Saturday.
Despite the decrease in attendees, the event's commercial booths are maintaining long lines for fans to buy limited-edition goods. About 35,000 doujin circles are exhibiting at this year's event, which is about the same as previous years. Singer Sachiko Kobayashi will appear on Sunday, marking her first time participating in Comiket.
About 180,000 people attended the first day of the winter Comiket 85 event in December.
