New York's IFC Center will screen Hiroyuki Okiura and Production I.G's A Letter to Momo film on July 23, followed by screenings in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Denver, Washington D.C., Boston, Minneapolis, Atlanta, and Seattle. GKIDS describes the story:
The last time Momo saw her father they had a fight – and now all she has left to remember him by is an incomplete letter, a blank piece of paper penned with the words “Dear Momo” but nothing more. Moving with her mother to the remote Japanese island of Shio, Momo soon discovers three yokai living in her attic, a trio of mischievous spirit creatures that only she can see and who create mayhem in the tiny seaside community as she tries desperately to keep them hidden. But these funny monsters have a serious side and may hold the key to helping Momo discover what her father had been trying to tell her.
The film held its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2011, and it opened in Japan on April 21, 2012. The film received the Grand Prize for Best Feature Film at last year's New York International Children's Film Festival, won the main prize in the "Feature film" category at the Czech AniFest, Best Animated Film at the 6th Asian Pacific Screen Awards, and won the Second Children Jury's Prize in the Animated Feature Film category at the 30th annual Chicago International Children's Film Festival (CICFF) last fall.
