posted on by Karen Ressler
Japanese television broadcaster WOWOW's Drama W announced a live-action drama adaptation of shojo manga author Yumiko Ōshima's series Gu-Gu Datte Neko de Aru on Monday. Oshima's series is a semi-autobiographical comic essay about her days with her beloved pet cat. Rie Miyazawa (Kiki's Delivery Service live-action film) will play Asako, a hard-working manga artist whose pet cat Saba passes away. Asako can no longer draw manga, so at the encouragement of her editor she moves into a new house to return to a more relaxed pace. One day, she comes across a sick, homeless kitten in the park and takes him in.
Isshin Inudou, who directed the 2008 film adaptation of the manga starring Kyoko Koizumi, will also direct the series. Ryū Takada will be in charge of the series scripts, and Ren Takada will compose the music. The series will air next fall.
