Dragon Ball Bonus Story to Run in Viz's Shonen Jump on Monday
posted on by Crystalyn Hodgkins
North American manga publisher Viz Media confirmed with ANN on Thursday that it will publish Akira Toriyama's "Dragon Ball Minus: Hanatareta Unmei no Kodomo" (Dragon Ball Minus: The Child Released from Fate) one-shot chapter digitally under the title "Dragon Ball Bonus Story." The company will publish the chapter in the April 7 issue of its Weekly Shonen Jump digital magazine.
Shueisha is publishing the chapter in Japan as a bonus chapter in the compiled volume of Toriyama's latest manga Jaco the Galactic Policeman. The volume ships in Japan on Friday.
Shueisha began streaming a trailer for both the Dragon Ball manga and the Jaco the Galactic Patrolman manga on Thursday.
The bonus Dragon Ball chapter will focus on Goku's mom, named Gine. Gine has a gentle nature, and she fights alongside Bardock in a four-Saiyan team, where he repeatedly saves her. Her temperament makes her unfit for the warrior life Saiyans lead, and she and Bardock develop romantic feelings for each other — something alien to the Saiyans, who only form relationships for the purpose of reproduction. As a consequence, she is assigned to a meat distribution center.
Shueisha is releasing Jaco the Galactic Patrolman in a regular edition and a special edition. The special "super elite" edition includes an AR postcard, a rubber keychain, and a badge and retails for 980 yen (about US$9.40).
Additionally, Shueisha compiled Toriyama and Masakazu Katsura's (Zetman, (Video Girl Ai, DNA²) two collaboration works — the three-chapter "Jiya," and the one-chapter "Sachie-chan Good!!" — and released them in a printed volume titled Katsura Akira on Friday in Japan.
