On February 7, police in Fukuoka Prefecture's cyber-crime unit and Fukuoka City's Nishi station arrested a 47-year-old unemployed man from Tokyo's Suginami Ward on suspicion of using the Share file-sharing software to upload manga without the copyright holders' permission. He was processed by Fukuoka's district public prosecutor the next day.
According to the Association of Copyright for Computer Software (ACCS), the suspect uploaded 37th Berserk manga volume around April 8, 2013. He is also suspected of uploading about 1,000 files of manga and other works. The police searched the suspect's home on the day of his arrest and confiscated a personal computer, hard drive, and other property.
The suspect allegedly admitted to the offenses in the police investigation, saying, "I thought I had to not only download, but also upload."
Security researchers have known about flaws in Share's anonymity features since 2006.
