Tonari no Seki-kun's 1st Animated Video Shows Off Quirky Humor
posted on by Egan Loo
The official website for the anime adaptation of Takuma Morishige's Tonari no Seki-kun comedy manga began streaming the first animated promotional video on Friday.
The story revolves around a girl named Yokoi who sits next to a boy known only as “Seki-kun.” During class, Seki-kun completely ignores everything around him and instead creates amazingly throrough little distractions, such as a detailed golf course with the course's hole being a dent in his desk, or an entire dramatic war being played out by paper shogi (Japanese chess) pieces.
The first promotional video is a thirty-second taste of the distractions that Seki-kun creates. The video below is the first for the "Robot Family" — the denizens of Seki-kun's table, as seen in popular installments of the manga:
Robot Son: Hey, Papa, will we show up [in the anime]?
Robot Papa: Don't worry, I'm sure we will.
Robot Mama: So hurry up and finish your dinner.
Robot Son: Okay…!
Yuji Mutoh (Crayon Shin-chan films, Green Green) is directing the series at Shin-Ei Animation (The Knight in the Area, Doraemon films). Masae Ōtake (Kuromajyo-san ga Tōru!!) is designing the characters.
Morishige began his manga in Comic Flapper in 2010. The manga was nominated in the 5th Manga Taisho Awards last year. A set of live-action commercials ran in Japanese bookstores and trains in 2011:
The television anime will premiere in January, and the fifth volume of the manga will bundle an anime DVD on January 4.
