Kantai Collection Moe Card Battle Game Gets Anime, New Manga

Kadokawa Games' browser game with girl battleships also inspires Kan Colle Kai on PS Vita

Kadokawa Games announced at the "Kadokawa Game Studio Media Briefing 2013 Autumn" on Thursday that an anime adaptation of its Kantai Collection -Kan Colle- (Fleet Collection) moe-character card battle game is in the works. According to the company, it is aiming for broadcast next summer or later with the voice cast from the game.

Kadokawa Games also announced that the second title (after Natural Doctrine) from its newly formed Kadokawa Game Studio is the tentatively titled Kan Colle Kai (Kantai Collection Kai). Like the original Kantai Collection game, the genre of this new PlayStation Vita game is "fleet-raising." It is slated for next year.

Kadokawa Games launched the original free-to-play browser game with the service provider DMM.com this past April. In the game, players compete with cards featuring female moe characters inspired by Japanese World War II warships such as aircraft carriers, battleships, and cruisers. Players build, organize, and repair their anthropomorphized fleet to progress through maps.

The November issue of Media Factory's Monthly Comic Alive magazine is also announcing on Friday that a new manga adaptation of the game has been green-lit. Sakae Saitō (Heavy Object S) is illustrating the manga that Comic Alive will preview in the following issue on October 26. The manga's regular serialization will begin in the January issue on November 27.

The coming issue features illustrations of five main "kanmusu" (fleet girl) characters and includes the silhouettes of two more characters. A new Kantai Collection feature will debut with the manga's preview in the December issue. Manga creator G=Hikorō (Fujimi Tantei Orurock) will provide additional illustrations for the feature. The issue will also include an A1-size poster with illustrations of more than 100 "kanmusu."

A four-panel manga adaptation by Ryota Momoi debuted in the Famitsu Comic Clear online manga magazine in April. In the school life story, older fleet girls teach their juniors battle techniques. The magazine previously announced that Shotaro Harada (D4 Princess) will illustrate a manga adaptation. In addition, a manga adaptation by SASAYUKi (Futago ya Futago no Futajūsō) is slated to launch in the December issue of Kadokawa Shoten's Comptiq magazine.
