The Wind Rises Is 1st Japanese Film to Top 10 Billion Yen Since Ponyo

posted on by Egan Loo

Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli's anime film The Wind Rises has earned over 10 billion yen (about US$100 million) at the Japanese box office as of Wednesday, September 11. It is the first Japanese film in five years to accomplish this feat; the last one was Miyazaki and Ghibli's own Ponyo in 2008. Another film that topped 10 billion yen was the American film Toy Story 3 in 2010.

The film has seen a surge in ticket sales since Miyazaki announced last week that he is retiring from making feature films — thus making The Wind Rises his last film. This past weekend's box office receipts were 34.5% higher than the previous weekend's.
