The 62nd volume of Masashi Kishimoto's Naruto manga ranked #1 on Nielsen BookScan's list of top 20 graphic novels in American bookstores for August. The first volume of Hajime Isayama's Attack on Titan manga ranked at #2.
Six other volumes of manga ranked in the top 20 for August. The 12th and final volume of Naoko Takeuchi's Sailor Moon manga ranked #4, Attack on Titan volume 2 ranked at #10, QuinRose and Mamenosuke Fujimaru's Alice in the Country of Hearts: The Clockmaker's Story ranked at #11, Naruto volume 61 ranked at #12, Yana Toboso's Black Butler volume 14 ranked at #16, and Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata's 20th and final Bakuman. volume ranked at #19.
Attack on Titan volume 1 had ranked at #12 in July and at #19 in June. Naruto volume 61 had ranked at #4 in July and #2 in June. The final Sailor Moon volume ranked at #1 last month, and Black Butler volume 14 had ranked at #15.
The ICv2 website noted that there was a large difference in sales for Attack on Titan between bookstores and comic book stores. ICv2 noted that while the series has ranked on Nielsen's top 20 chart throughout the summer, in June volume 5 in the series sold only 330 copies in comic book stores to rank at #297. No volumes in the series ranked in the top 300 in comic book stores in July.
The BookScan rankings represent sales at Barnes & Noble and other book chains, independent bookshops, and online purchases — but not sales at comic book stores, Walmart, and some other venues.
