Machiko Ono Plays Sazae-san Creator in Live-Action Bio

Japanese broadcaster Fuji TV announced on Wednesday that actress Machiko Ono will star as Sazae-san manga creator Machiko Hasegawa in an upcoming live-action television special about the creator's life. The tentatively titled special Hasegawa Machiko Monogatari ~Sazae-san ga Umareta Hi~ (The Story of Machiko Hasegawa ~The Day Sazae-san Was Born) will air to commemorate 45 years of the Sazae-san television anime.
Machiko Ono acknowledged her worry about acting the role, saying, “Honestly, I am very scared of acting as a person who actually existed, let alone the creator of Sazae-san!” She commented, “I think I'd like to act as her with my usual motto of 'being true to myself.'”
The essay manga Sazae-san Uchiake Banashi (Confidential Talk on Sazae-san) is being used as the main reference for the special. The special will tell the story of the passing of Hasegawa's beloved father, her mother's decision to move from Fukuoka to Tokyo, her apprenticeship as a 15-year-old under artist Suihō Tagawa, her brother-in-law's death during World War II, and her lonely path before, during, and after the war.
TV Man Union director Yoshito Katō is helming the special based on a screenplay by Eri Ōjima. The special is scheduled to air in November.
