posted on by Karen Ressler
Last Friday's re-airing of Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli's 1986 anime film Laputa: Castle in the Sky earned television ratings of 18.5%, surpassing December 2011's ratings of 15.9%. The film's re-airing in 1989, however, still holds the record for ratings at 22.6%.
The event streamed on Nico Nico Douga under the title "~Laputa: Castle in the Sky~ Everyone let's watch Ghibli films together," and it included appearances from Ghibli producer Toshio Suzuki and Nihon TV producer Seiji Okuda to discuss the film. Japanese fans set a world record for most tweets per second by tweeting the word "balse" at the same moment that the main characters Pazu and Sheeta chant the word at the climax of the film. The airing has since been called the "balse festival."
