Masaaki Yuasa & I.G's crowdfunded anime short honored at int'l film festival
The official Twitter account for Masaaki Yuasa and Production I.G's crowd-funded animated short film "Kick-Heart" announced on Monday that the short won the Original Design Award at the Animation Block Party in New York. Animation Block Party is an international animation film festival that features professional, independent, and student animation projects from around the world.
Kick-Heart is a love story between Romeo, a successful pro-wrestler, and Juliet, a nun who lives a secret double-life as a female pro-wrestler. Romeo's secret is that he enjoys taking a beating in the ring, while Juliet feels invigorated when facing her opponents as a wrestler. When the two meet in the ring, the fireworks fly. Their story is set in the colorful backdrop of the professional wrestling world. Will Juliet reveal her true identity to the one she loves? Will Romeo be able to share his secret to the world?
The short premiered in Tokyo in May, and then was shown in competition at this year's Annecy in France in June. The film was also screened at Anime Expo earlier this month, and screened at Montreal's Fantasia International Film Festival. It was also screened at Laemmle's Royale Theatre in Los Angeles earlier this month with the intention of qualifying for an Oscar nomination.
