Discotek Media announced on Tuesday that it licensed the Devilman television anime series, Cardcaptor Sakura: The Movie, the Jin-Roh film, and Mamoru Oshii's Dallos original video anime series. It also confirmed its license for the Lily C.A.T. original video anime project.
Gō Nagai created both the classic horror action manga Devilman and the first Devilman television anime simultaneously in 1972. They spawned over a dozen different spinoffs and remakes since then. Discotek will release all 39 episodes of the first television anime series on DVD in 2014.
Cardcaptor Sakura: The Movie opened in theaters in Japan in 1999. The story is set during the 70-episode Card Captor Sakura television anime, with Sakura and her friends heading to Hong Kong. While there, Sakura encounters a vengeful spirit seeking to enact her revenge against Clow Reed. Geneon Entertainment released the film on DVD in 2002. Discotek will release the film on Blu-ray and DVD next year.
The film written by Oshii (Patlabor, Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence) takes place in an alternate history of Japan, where a Special Forces team is tasked with preserving peace in Japan during a time of civil unrest. Special Forces member Kazuki Fuse witnesses a suicide bombing by a young girl, and is forced to undergo retraining within the unit. Bandai Entertainment originally released the film in North America on DVD in 2002. Discotek will release the film on DVD and Blu-ray next year.
The four-episode Dallos series was released in Japan in 1984 and has the distinction of being the first original video anime project ever. The science-fiction story follows mankind after the Earth's resources fail and mankind relocates to the moon. Discotek will release the series on DVD in early 2014.This will be the first North American release of this anime.
Discotek also confirmed that it will release the 1987 anime Lily C.A.T. on DVD early next year with both Japanese and English audio tracks. The single-episode project was released on dub VHS tape in 1995 by Image Entertainment and follows a galactic crew who come down with a strange virus.
Discotek will release its previously announced Blue Submarine No. 6 title on September 14 with English dub and subtitles. The company adds that its release will have "video quality upgraded from the previous US DVDs." The Great Teacher Onizuka complete collection will follow on September 24 with English dub and subtitles.
Update: The first Card Captor Sakura movie takes place during the course of the television series. Thanks, sakurablossom143
