Cirque du Freak's Arai Launches Manga of Les Misérables Novel

posted on by Karen Ressler
Series to debut in Monthly Shonen Sunday this September

The August issue of Shogakukan's Monthly Shonen Sunday magazine is announcing on Friday that Cirque du Freak manga artist Takahiro Arai will launch a new series based on the classic French novel Les Misérables by Victor Hugo. The series will begin in the magazine's October issue, which will ship on September 12.

Arai drew the manga adaptation of British author Darren Shan's Cirque du Freak novels in the same Weekly Shonen Sunday magazine from 2006 to beginning of 2009, and Yen Press published all 12 volumes in North America. After the series' completion, Arai drew the series Arago ~London Shikei Tokushu Hanzai Sōsakan~ (Arago: City of London Police's Special Crimes Investigator), which ran for nine volumes.

Hugo's Les Miserables has previously been adapted into the anime series Les Misérables - Shōjo Cosette in 2007 as part of Nippon Animation's World Masterpiece Theater, and the anime special Jean Valjean Monogatari in 1979. In addition to the many television and film adaptations, the story is arguably best known worldwide through the 1980 stage musical. The musical in turn inspired last year's live-action film.
