The 2011-2012 Digimon anime series, Digimon Xros Wars: The Young Hunters Who Leapt Through Time, is nominated in the Animation category for the first annual International Emmy Kids Awards.
Digimon is competing against the United Kingdom's The Amazing World of Gumball, Spain's Ask Laura, and France's The Jungle Bunch. Other award categories include Preschool, Factual, Non-Scripted Entertainment, Series, and TV Movie/Mini-Series.
Japan's Junior High School Diaries (Chūgaku Sei Nikki) is also nominated in the Series category.
The International Academy of Arts and Sciences launched the International Emmy Kids Awards to recognize "excellence in children's television programming produced and initially aired outside of the United States."
Academy President & CEO Bruce L. Paisner said, "For years, kids production has been underserved in our International Emmy awards process, and we felt strongly it was time to give that vital and booming programming area its due. “These new International Emmys will provide a global showcase for the world's best kids programming and a unique networking opportunity for kids television executives from around the world.”
The Academy began accepting nominations in early 2012 with judging running through the summer and fall. Winners will receive their awards February 8 at the first International Emmy Kids Awards Gala in New York City.
