PictureBox Adds Shigeru Sugiura's Last of the Mohicans Manga

North American publisher PictureBox confirmed with ANN on Friday that it will release Shigeru Sugiura's 1974 manga adaptation of James Fenimore Cooper's The Last of the Mohicans historical novel. The publisher will release the manga on April 30 for US$19.95. The release will mark the first time that a book-length work of Sugiura's will be published in English. Manga scholar Ryan Holmberg will edit and translate the volume, and will also provide an introduction essay.
Sugiura (1908-2000) originally adapted Cooper's novel in 1953, and that adaptation sold more than 60,000 copies, making Sugiura one of the most popular children's manga artists in the 1950s. He made a comeback in the late-60s with more surreal works, and he rewrote Last of the Mohicans in that more surrealistic style in 1974.
PictureBox representative Dan Nadel also confirmed with ANN that its release of Shigeru Sugiura: Last of the Mohicans will launch the publisher's "Ten Cent Manga" line, which will focus on "mass-produced genre works in Japanese postwar comics." Nadel noted that the next book in the series will be out in fall 2014, and the company will announce the author of that next work in the next few weeks.
