70 Million PlayStation 3s Shipped Worldwide in 6 Years

posted on by Crystalyn Hodgkins

Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) announced on Friday that as of November 4 it has shipped more than 70 million PlayStation 3 consoles to retailers worldwide since the console launched in November 2006. The company also announced that it has shipped more than 15 million PlayStation Move controllers worldwide as of November 11. Sony began selling the controllers in September 2010.

While SCE's press release said that it has "sold" more than 70 million PS3 consoles and 15 million PlayStation Move controllers, the press release also mentions in a footnote that these are "sell-in numbers" — meaning that these are numbers that have been sold to retailers, not to actual customers.

SCE also noted that 3,490 software titles have been released for the PS3.

Microsoft had announced last month that as of September 30 the company has sold 70 million Xbox 360 units since the console debuted in November 2005. Microsoft's report did not specify if these sale numbers were sales to retailers or consumers.
