Woman Arrested for Defrauding Would-Be Cosplay Buyers
posted on by Egan Loo
Police in Aomori Prefecture's Hachinohe City arrested 24-year-old Hokkaido resident Yukari Ishii on Tuesday on suspicion of defrauding would-be buyers of cosplay outfits. According to the police, the suspect responded to an outfit request on an online cosplay forum site. She allegely told a 34-year-old Tokyo female part-time worker in a May 5 email that she would mail an outfit after receiving payment. The would-be buyer sent 35,000 yen (about US450) to a bank account under Ishii's name on May 7 at about 5:00 p.m., but reportedly never received the outfit.
Using the same modus operandi, the suspect allegedly defrauded an unemployed 18-year-old Hachinohe girl who sent 40,000 yen (US$515) on August 2 at about 12:35 p.m. The girl contacted the authorities on September 12, and the resulting investigation led to the suspect's arrest.
