Lucky Star Shrine's Unused Storehouse Burns Down
posted on by Egan Loo
At about 4:25 a.m. on Thursday, a storehouse at Washinomiya Shrine, the Tokyo area's oldest shrine and a real-life backdrop for the Lucky Star anime series, caught on fire and burned down. The storehouse was not being used at the time, and no one was injured.
The 14-square-meter (about 150-square-feet), one-story wooden storehouse is about 120 meters (400 feet) northwest of the main shrine. According to the police, a nearby resident spotted black smoke coming out of the storehouse, and a female staff member at the shrine's office called the emergency hotline number. An unspecified number of priests and male part-time workers were busy at a pre-fabricated shed next to the storehouse, but they did not see anyone or anything suspicious.
The police reported that the storehouse was previously used as a changing room and other purposes, and it had a stove and an electric fan. However, it was not being used at the time of the fire.
