Sakura Wars' Hiroi Creates Animated Spy Penguin Series
posted on by Egan Loo
The October issue of Shueisha's Saikyō Jump manga anthology will bundle the first DVD in a new animation series titled Spy Penguin when it ships on September 4. The animation studio WField (pronounced "double field") is collaborating with the Taiwanese CG animation studio Next Media Animation to create the series, which is advertised as the "world's(!?) first DVD anime serialized in a magazine."
WField is currently streaming a digest preview for the series.
WField is developing Spy Penguin, with a goal of distributing the series to foreign markets. Spy Penguin will revolve around a group of three penguins who protect Paris from those who threaten the peace.
The Japanese company Calimero Work credits Sakura Wars original creator Ouji Hiroi as the original creator and director, and Yoshiteru Tsujino (Lupin III: The Fuma Conspiracy's key animation) with handling the character design. Raymond is serving as CG director, Yukio Nagasaki (Hakuōki Reimeiroku, Valkyria Chronicles, tsuritama) is acting as sound supervisor, and Masaki Sakamoto (Patlabor: The Movie, R.O.D -The TV-, Rave Master) is serving as editor.
The cast includes Ikue Oe as Rooky, Eiji Takemoto as Texture, Hisao Egawa as Roborobo, Unshou Ishizuka as Big Boss, Shiho Kikuchi as Lady Kiosque, and Masato Oba as WB.
