On Monday, Japan's Okayama Prefectural Police arrested a 40-year-old self-employed man in the city of Kobe for allegedly distributing obscene images. The suspect was specifically charged for selling three illustrations off his website to an Okayama man in his 30s on April 9. The suspect allegedly sold the illustrations for a total of 1,500 yen (about US$19).
According to the police, the suspect has admitted his guilt, and stated that "wanting money" was the motive for his actions.
The public exhibition, physical or electronic distribution, or possession with the intent to distribute of obscene documents or images is illegal under Japan's penal code with a maximum sentence of two years in prison or a 2.5-million-yen fine (US$32,000). However, the definition of obscenity is left undefined within the code.
