French television channel TF1 began streaming the first promotional video for its upcoming French-animated sequel to Studio Pierrot's Mysterious Cities of Gold anime on Wednesday. The original story followed a Spanish boy, an Incan girl, and a boy from the Galapagos Islands as they searched for the fabled Cities of Gold in South America.
France's Blue Spirit Animation is planning three new 26-episode series with Movie-Plus. The production will be in the French town of Angoulême and continue until September 2012. According to the Maglis Angouleme site, "While maintaining the universe, the original characters and all that was attractive, this new series will bring its share of novelties, surprises and twists."
The French studio DiC collaborated on the original animated series, which premiered from 1982 to 1983. It was also broadcast on Japan's NHK channel under the title Taiyo no Ko Esteban (Esteban, a Boy from the Sun).
No Japanese staff members have been announced for the sequel.
