The English-language website for the 009 Re:Cyborg film began streaming an "International Version" trailer on Saturday. The 274-second trailer introduces the story's characters through footage of the film.
The film, which is Kamiyama's first in full-3D animation, adapts Shōtarō Ishinomori's classic science fiction manga Cyborg 009. The film will open in more than five Asian regions simultaneously, including Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, and South Korea. Production I.G and SANZIGEN Animation Studio are co-producing the project, and the film distributor T-Joy will release the film in Japan on October 27.
Kamiyama has produced two 3D Pepsi Nex ads with Cyborg 009. Kamiyama is both directing and scripting the story of the new film, which will be set in the year 2013.
In the original manga, the secret Black Ghost organization transforms nine unsuspecting humans into cyborgs. However, the nine cyborgs turn on their masters and protect the rest of humanity from Black Ghost's plans for world war.
There have already been three Cyborg 009 television anime series which premiered in 1968, 1979, and 2001. There have also been three theatrical anime films in 1966, 1967, and 1980. Another director with Ghost in the Shell and Production I.G ties, Mamoru Oshii, directed his own 3D short of Cyborg 009 in 2010 with sponsor Panasonic.
