Sony Pictures Adds Onigamiden Historical Fantasy Anime
posted on by Egan Loo
The American distributor arm of Sony Pictures will release Hirotsugu Kawasaki and Studio Pierrot's anime film Onigamiden under the title Legend of the Millennium Dragon on October 4. The film will ship in a US$45.99 Blu-ray Disc/DVD combo pack and on a standalone DVD. Before the home video release, Onigamiden will have its American premiere at Anime Expo in Los Angeles on July 1.
The story revolves around a 15-year-old boy who travels back in time — over 1,200 years ago to the Heian period — and faces a war between oni (demons) and humans in the former Japanese capital of Kyoto.
The anime adapts a 2004 two-volume novel by the same name from author Takafumi Takada. After being delayed from its earlier October 2010 release date, the film opened in Japan on April 29.
Sony Pictures' release will have English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Japanese, and Thai soundtracks, along with English subtitles for the hard-of-hearing and other languages.
