Dennō Coil Web Game's Global Rights Licensed by GameOn

Global game inspired by anime set in near future with augmented reality

The Japanese online game company GameOn has announced on Tuesday that it acquired the exclusive global license to make a web browser game based on the Dennō Coil (Den-noh Coil) television anime series from Tokuma Shoten. The tentatively titled "Dennō Coil Online" game will adapt Mitsuo Iso's story about a group of children in the near future who use net-connected augmented-reality (AR) eyeglasses. The children travel throughout a city to uncover the mysteries behind the new technological advances there.

GameOn's development and distribution license is worldwide, and the company intends to run the game not only in Japan, but throughout the world. The company has not yet determined its development schedule, the specific regions in which the game will be supported besides Japan, or the launch date for the game's paid service.

The original anime aired from May to December of 2007. It won the Excellence Prize in the 2007 (11th) Japan Media Arts Festival Awards, the Television category in the 7th annual Tokyo Anime Awards, and the Media category in the 46th Japan Science Fiction Convention's Seiun Awards.

GameOn had already announced in April that it licensed the global rights to make a browser game based on Yoshiki Tanaka's Legend of the Galactic Heroes novel series. Bandai Namco Games announced its Gundam Browser Wars game earlier this month, but the game's requirements specify that users must be running Microsoft Windows or Mac OS X with Japanese language support.
