K-ON! Tops Bakemonogatari as #1 TV Anime in BD Sales
posted on by Egan Loo
With this month's release of the third Blu-ray Disc volume from the K-ON!! anime, the overall K-ON! franchise has now topped Bakemonogatari as the #1 selling television anime on Blu-ray. The market survey firm Oricon Communications reports that the third Blu-ray volume, which contains episodes 7-9 and officially went on sale on September 15, sold 28,000 copies during the September 13-19 week. It ranked #1 on the weekly Blu-ray sales chart.
The Blu-ray volumes for both television anime series based on kakifly's manga have now sold a total of 348,000 copies. By contrast, Bakemonogatari sold a total of 331,000 copies, although there have only been six volumes of that anime series.
The 3rd K-ON!! DVD volume only sold 3,867 copies in its first week — less than a seventh of the number of copies that the more expensive Blu-ray version sold. The original manga ended in Houbunsha's Manga Time Kirara magazine on September 9, and the main storyline in the K-ON!! anime ended on September 14. Two more side-story episodes are airing this Tuesday and next Tuesday. Bandai Entertainment licensed the first anime series for North America, and Yen Press licensed the original manga.
