Anime & Philosophy, Manga & Philosophy Books This Year

Two new entries into Open Court's "Popular Culture and Philosophy" series, Anime and Philosophy and Manga and Philosophy, are slated for this year. According to the Amazon website, Anime and Philosophy has a street date of April 1, 2010, and Manga and Philosophy has a street date of June 1, 2010. Josef Steiff, Associate Chair of the Film and Video Department at Columbia College, co-edited both books. Adam Barkman, Associate Professor of Philosophy at Yonsei University in South Korea, co-edited Manga and Philosophy with Steiff, and Tristan Tamplin, who has a Ph.D. in philosophy, co-edited Anime and Philosophy.
Open Court's "Popular Culture and Philosophy" series, which started in 2000, presents "essays by academic philosophers exploring the meanings, concepts, and puzzles within television shows, movies, music and other icons of popular culture." Other books among those in the series include: The Legend of Zelda and Philosophy, World of Warcraft and Philosophy, and The Lord of the Rings and Philosophy.
