10 minutes of Fumihiko Sori's computer-animated To science-fiction action project began streaming on the YouTube and Nico Nico Douga websites on Thursday. The 10 minutes come from a space battle sequence in the two-chapter project. The anime's official website is also streaming several other clips. After producing the first computer-animated Appleseed film and directing both Ping Pong and Vexille - 2077 Isolation of Japan, SORI is now adapting two stories from Yukinobu Hoshino's 2001 Nights (2001 Ya Monotogari) manga. "Symbiotic Planet" and "Elliptical Orbit" are part of Hoshino's centuries-long storyline about mankind's voyages into space. Jun Fukuyama and Aya Hirano lead the voice cast as Ion and Ariina, respectively.
The retail DVD and Blu-ray Disc versions will ship in Japan on December 18. Viz published the original manga in English in North America, and the manga was also translated into Chinese, Korean, Italian, and Thai. The manga already inspired a 1987 video anime adaptation from TMS Entertainment and director Yoshio Takeuchi.
