posted on by Egan Loo
San Francisco's New People World cultural entertainment center will be hosting a free "Yōkai University San Francisco Campus" exhibition at its Viz Cinema lobby from October 23 to November 6. The event will celebrate different aspects of yōkai, the Japanese word for mythical spirits. Japanese Ukiyo-e woodblock prints by artist Hokusai Katsushika and yōkai artwork by GeGeGe no Kitarō creator Shigeru Mizuki will be on display.
Matt Alt, the co-author of Hello, Please! Very Helpful Super Kawaii Characters from Japan and Super #1 Robot: Japanese Robot Toys, 1972-1982, will be presenting a free lecture on yōkai on October 31 at 1:00 p.m. Last October, Alt and Hiroko Yoda published Yōkai Attack!: The Japanese Monster Survival Guide, a book which is billed as "the first-ever English language yōkai guidebook."
