Viz Cinema, the theater at the "New People" cultural entertainment center in San Francisco's Japantown, will host the West Coast premiere of Katsuhito Ishii's live-action Sarasoi film tonight and the American premiere of the first Naruto Shippūden film on October 6. The director of Funky Forest: The First Contact, The Taste of Tea, and Shark Skin Man and Peach Hip Girl will personally appear at the Friday premiere of Sarasoi, which will run at Viz Cinema until October 1. His newest film centers on a group of college students who stay at the Sorasoi beach hostel to prepare for a dance competition. Attendees of the premiere will receive a Funky Forest phone strap.
In addition to his live-action work, Ishii directed the Hal & Bons anime videos, co-scripted Madhouse's new Redline anime film, and designed the anime portion of Kill Bill.
Viz Media is offering five free tickets to the American theatrical premiere of the first Naruto Shippūden film. The film will ship on DVD on November 10. The Disney XD channel will start televising the Naruto Shippūden television series next month.
