Special open-category Karl Edward Wagner Award presented this weekend
Studio Ghibli co-founder and anime film director Hayao Miyazaki has won the Karl Edward Wagner Award at the 2009 British Fantasy Awards (BFAwards) presentation ceremony at FantasyCon in Nottingham this past weekend. The British Film Society, FantasyCon, and BFAwards Committees select the winner of this special award with no genre or medium restrictions.
Previous winners of this award have included Ray Harryhausen, Peter Jackson, Anne McCaffrey, and Diana Wynne Jones. Miyazaki had adapted Jones' Howl's Moving Castle novel into an anime film in 2004.
Miyazaki's latest film, Ponyo, will open in the United Kingdom early next year, after opening in Japan last year and in North America last month August.
