posted on by Egan Loo
Selected theaters across North America will begin playing Ponyo, the latest anime film from Oscar-winning director Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli, at one minute past midnight tonight. The film's official website lists the theaters hosting the late-night screenings (after users enter their city or ZIP code). Other theaters will start showing the film later on Friday. As of Thursday, the movie has a 94% "Fresh" rating on the Rotten Tomatoes review aggregator website and a score of 91 out of 100 on the similar Metacritic website.
The film's story follows an ordinary boy named Sosuke (Frankie Jonas in the English dub) and his friendship with Ponyo (Noah Cyrus), an unusual goldfish from the seas. The other English-language castmembers include Cate Blanchett, Matt Damon, Tina Fey, Cloris Leachman, Liam Neeson, Lily Tomlin, and Betty White. The Yahoo! Movies and Apple websites have been streaming the trailers.
