Viz Adds Battle League Horumo Film with Effects by Gonzo

posted on by Egan Loo

Viz Pictures, the live-action film affiliate of Viz Media, has announced that it has licensed Katsuhide Motoki's live-action fighting action comedy film, Battle League Horumo. The film centers around an incoming Kyoto University freshman who gets initiated into a secret oni (supernatural entity) battle league tournament held by the four universities of the city. The anime studio Gonzo (Afro Samurai, Basilisk) created the visual effects for the oni. The live-action Train Man: Densha Otoko film's main lead actor Takayuki Yamada stars as the hapless freshman Akira Abe. Motoki had previously directed the two live-action Gegege no Kitarō films.

The film will screen first at Montreal's 2009 Fantasia Festival during July 9-27. It will then screen at Austin's 2009 Fantastic Fest (September 24-October 1) and the 2009 Hawaii International Film Festival (October 15-25).
