The Anime Expo 2009 convention has announced in a press release and at its closing ceremony on Sunday that over 44,000 unique attendees went to the July 2-5 event. The Anime Expo organizers at The Society for the Promotion of Japanese Animation (SPJA) has also announced that they will return to the Los Angeles Convention Center from July 1 to July 4, 2010. Sunday's charity auction contributed "just under" US$30,000 for the Children's Hospital Orange County.
SPJA announced last year that 43,000 unique attendees went to Anime Expo 2008 in the same Los Angeles venue. SPJA had recorded 41,500 attendees for Anime Expo 2007 at Long Beach, California. 26,300 people attended Otakon in Baltimore, Maryland last year, and 22,852 attended the same convention the previous year.
