Flashback: Michael Jackson (1958-2009) was the first major American artist to use anime in a music video on MTV. His 1995 "Scream" collaboration with his sister Janet Jackson included some brief background sequences from Tatsunoko Production's Akai Kōdan Zillion anime series.
Another American artist, Matthew Sweet, appeared in two earlier music videos with anime footage. Sweet's "Girlfriend" video included footage from Space Adventure Cobra, and the "I've Been Waiting" video included footage from Urusei Yatsura.
