posted on by Egan Loo
A live-action television drama adaptation of Kou Yaginuma's Twin Spica science-fiction manga will premiere on the Japanese public broadcaster NHK on June 11. The near-future coming-of-age story follows a girl named Asumi who is going to a Space Academy. With a little push from her rocket design engineer father, Asumi studies to be an astronaut. The original manga has Asumi's choice being influenced by a family tragedy and a figure from the past.
16-year-old Nanami Sakuraba will play Asumi. Sakuraba is best known for appearing in commercials for the mobile phone and electronics company SoftBank, but she will also play the character Natsuki Shinohara in Summer Wars film from director Mamoru Hosoda (The Girl Who Leapt Through Time).
Media Factory will published the 15th volume of the manga in June. NHK also aired Tomomi Mochizuki (Here Is Greenwood, Ocean Waves, Ranma ½) and Group TAC's anime version of Twin Spica from 2003 to 2004.
