Japanese am/pm Convenience Store Tests Manga Rentals
posted on by Egan Loo
The am/pm Japan chain of convenience stores has begun a test manga rental program in one of its branches in Chiba Prefecture, just east of Tokyo, on Saturday. The store offers 3,000 volumes of popular manga series, all in the hopes that customers will make more shopping trips to the store to rent and return manga. The company eventually aims to rent 100 volumes a day and generate 450,000 more yen (about US$5,000) per month in each store.
Convenience stores have been a popular place to buy both manga magazines and compiled volumes in Japan for years. A few businesses in North American cities with many Japanese immigrants, particularly in California, have rented manga long before am/pm launched its pilot program in Japan.

Update: Each manga volume can be rented overnight for 90 yen.
