FUNimation to Distribute Gungrave Anime for Geneon
posted on by Egan Loo
The North American distributor FUNimation Entertainment has announced on Tuesday that it will distribute Yasuhiro Nightow and Madhouse's Gungrave television anime series for Geneon Entertainment. Nightow, the creator of the Trigun manga and anime, co-developed the Gungrave anime series and the PlayStation 2 videogame of the same name. FUNimation will release the entire 26-episode Gungrave anime series in 2009.
The story centers on Brandon Heat, a stoic man who has had his eyes on a beautiful woman named Maria. When Brandon's friends and Maria's father are murdered, Brandon goes on the lam with his only surviving friend, Harry McDowell. The two infiltrate the most ruthless crime syndicate, Millennion, after Brandon discovers that Millennion took Maria away. Brandon's life slides into darker depths as he plots his vengeance on Millennion and those who have wronged him.
Geneon Entertainment (USA) Inc. (under its former name of Pioneer) had released this anime series in North America in 2004 and 2005. Then, Geneon Entertainment ceased in-house distribution of its own titles in September 2007. FUNimation announced at Anime Expo 2008 this past July that it agreed to manufacture, sell, and distribute selected DVD titles from Geneon Entertainment in North America. However, FUNimation had not announced that it will distribute Gungrave until now.
