LGBT News Site Examines Yuri Genre of Manga
posted on by Egan Loo
Advocate.com, a LGBT news website, profiles yuri manga works and the distinction between their themes and their audience. The site notes that yuri manga titles depicts lesbian relationships, but their readers do not necessarily identify themselves as lesbians. Similarly, yaoi and boys-love manga works depict gay male relationships for mostly straight female readers, while bara manga depict gay male relationships for mostly gay male readers. ALC Publishing founder Erica Friedman, Tokyopop senior editor Lillian Diaz-Przybyl, and translator Mari Marimoto discuss the reception of yuri manga in both Japan and America. The site also quotes Roland Kelts' Japanamerica book on the duality of Japan's societal and cultural boundaries.
Thank you to Erica Friedman for the news tip.
