Koji Yamamura's A Country Doctor Wins at Czech Anifest
posted on by Mikhail Koulikov
The Czech Republic's AniFest film festival, which ran in the South Bohemian city of Trebon earlier this month, has awarded this year's prize for best short film to Koji Yamamura's Franz Kafka's A Country Doctor. The film is adapted from a short story by the early 20th-century Czech writer. AniFest's jury lauded the anime short as "inspired, expressive, original, and demonstrating masterful storytelling and animation."
Since its 2007 premiere, A Country Doctor has quickly become one of anime's most critically acclaimed works. It was named a winner of the Japanese Ministry of Cultural Affairs' Prize for Excellence in Animation, took the Ofuji Noburo Award at the 62nd Mainichi Film Awards, and received grand prizes at the Ottawa International Animation Festival and Italy's "I Castelli Animati" fest. A Japanese-language DVD is scheduled for a May 30 release.
