3rd Higurashi Tentatively Slated as Rei Video Series

The June issue (released on April 30) of Gakken's Megami Magazine has revealed that the previously announced third Higurashi no Naku Koroni anime season is tentatively titled Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Rei and planned as an original video anime series. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Rei was the name of a 2006 software fan disc that included two story chapters based on the original murder mystery visual novels, but it is not necessarily the basis for the third anime project's plot. The producers are still determining the final release schedule, but plan to preview some footage this year.
The two previous anime seasons were broadcasted on Japanese television. Geneon Entertainment released part of the first season in North America in 2007 before it ceased in-house production and distribution of anime. The first live-action film adaptation opens on May 10, and a film sequel is already in the works.
