Evangelion: 1.0 You Are [Not] Alone, the first of four movie remakes of the Neon Genesis Evangelion science-fiction anime series, has begun its international box office run in South Korea. Hideaki Anno's film first premiered in this country during the closing day of the Pusan Film Festival on October 12. (That screening's film reels were translated into English by Dan Kanemitsu and subtitled by David Fleming.) The film ran preview showings in 10 Korean theaters during the January 18-20 weekend and ranked at 15th place. It then expanded to 31 theaters in its official opening weekend of January 25-27, and rose to 11th place.
The film ran on fewer screens than the top current American and Korean films, but it had the third highest per-screen average overall (US$5,560), after the Korean film Woorisaengae Choigoeui Sungan (Forever the Moment at US$7,493) and the American film Cloverfield (US$6,169). Evangelion: 1.0's two-week box office total in South Korea stood at 30 million yen (US$274,823). By comparison, the movie opened in 84 theaters in Japan during the September 1-2 weekend and earned about 280 million yen (US$2.4 million).
